Algae Purse explores the potential of biofabricated textiles through a fully biodegradable, hand-crocheted design. Made entirely from sodium alginate, a natural polymer derived from seaweed, and cured in a calcium chloride solution, this material is a flexible yet sturdy fiber, allowing it to be shaped into a functional purse capable of holding a phone and small essentials.
Materials & Process
- Bioyarn Formation: A mixture of sodium alginate, food coloring, glycerin, oil, chitosan, and water was extruded from a syringe and cured in a calcium chloride solution, creating a strong, biodegradable fiber. Experimentation was done with varying amounts of the components to create the optimal rigidity / flexibility of the material.
- Hand-Crocheted Structure: Once cured, the biofabric was shaped, crocheted, and stitched to form the structure of the purse. The material maintained flexibility while remaining sturdy enough for functional use.
- Compostable & Sustainable: Fully biodegradable, the purse naturally decomposes over time, leaving no waste behind.
Algae Purse serves as an experiment in sustainable fashion and regenerative design, offering a glimpse into biodegradable alternatives to traditional textiles. With craftsmanship with biofabrication, this piece highlights the practical use cases of material science and wearable design. The process explores alternatives to traditional leather and synthetic fabrics, highlighting the potential of biofabrication in reducing material waste.
