Visualizing internal states through digital telekinesis

Mind Forms explores the intersection of virtual and physical experiences, translating unseen internal states into visible, manipulatable digital objects. Using the Muse S EEG headband to capture real-time brainwave activity, the project creates a tangible representation of mental states, allowing users to better understand and share these abstract experiences.

Materials:

  • Hardware: Muse S EEG headband
  • Software: Max/MSP for signal processing, OSC for real-time data streaming

Brainwave data is streamed via OSC to Max/MSP, where it is processed and mapped to the behavior of a digital object. As relaxation increases, the object begins to morph and distort at a faster pace. For example, in the accompanying video, closing my eyes results in a rapid, fluid transformation of the shape—a reflection of my internal state becoming visually accessible in real time.

By connecting our inner worlds to external representations, this project suggests new ways technology can foster empathy and deeper connections. Through visualizing emotional and mental states, we create a shared language for experiences that are often difficult to articulate, opening pathways for collective understanding and connection.

Future Directions:
Future iterations will explore more intricate mappings, where the object forms unique, personalized shapes based on meditative or attentive states—a kind of "memory visualization." These could involve machine learning models and larger datasets to calibrate shapes to individuals. This research could ultimately pave the way for technologies that enhance self-awareness and shared emotional experiences.
