neural dome

Large-scale immersive installation at Burning Man

Neural Dome is a large-scale audio-visual-tactile installation designed to simulate the experience of being inside a brain. Suspended within a geodesic steel dome, neuron-inspired wire sculptures illuminated by over 1,000 LEDs created a mesmerizing, organic atmosphere. The visual elements were synchronized with a rumbling bass floor and spatial audio to create a fully immersive, multi-sensory environment.

Each neuron was crafted by bending wire armature into organic, dendritic forms. Spanning approximately 7 feet in length, the 11 sculptures were adorned with over 1,000 individually addressable LED lights. The neurons were then suspended within the dome, carefully arranged to balance spatial density and maintain an immersive environment.

Using Blender, each sculpture was meticulously point-mapped by measuring wire lengths and LED positions. The data was exported to SL Studio, where custom algorithms were developed to control the lighting, including cross-fade and volumetric effects.

    Materials:

    • Structure: Steel geodesic dome, bolts, washers
    • Sculptures: Wire armature, LED strips (individually addressable)
    • Software: Blender, SL Studio, Ableton Live
    • Sound System: Surround speakers, bass transducers

Future directions include integrating biosensors such as EEG headsets to create real-time interactions, allowing the installation to respond dynamically to participants' brain activity or heart rate.
