wisteria stardome

EL-wire light installation for Center Camp at Japan Burning Man

Wisteria Stardome consists of a bamboo geodesic structure into a glowing, immersive canopy of cascading light and foliage. Designed for Center Camp at Japan Burning Man, the installation combines over 100 meters of illuminated EL wire and 200 branches of artificial wisteria, creating a vibrant and ethereal centerpiece for communal gathering.

The installation combines both natural and synthetic materials, blending the organic structure of the bamboo dome and the flow of wisteria vines with the glow of EL wire. Suspended from the bamboo stardome frame, the branches cascade downward, creating an interplay of light, shadow, and texture. The ambient glow of the EL wire shifts subtly with the movement of wind blowing through the colored canopy roof, creating a serene environment that invites contemplation and connection.

Materials

  • 100+ meters of EL wire in soft purple and green hues
  • 200 branches of artificial wisteria leaves and vines
  • Bamboo geodesic stardome for structural support
  • Power inverters and controllers for EL wire synchronization

The installation was designed to honor the themes of natural beauty and communal creativity. Leading a team of more than 10 people, I oversaw the design, construction, and final assembly of the piece. Key tasks included:

  • Designing the cascading wisteria concept to integrate with the geometry of the stardome
  • Coordinating EL wire wiring, soldering, and programming for illumination
  • Ensuring power levels were stable across the exhibit, and waterproofing the installation
  • Assembling branches with precision to balance aesthetic flow and structural stability
